UW-WC presents "The Beauty Queen of Leenane"

Dark Comedy opens November 1st

UW-Washington County will present The Beauty Queen of Leenane on Friday and Saturday evenings, November 1, 2 and 8, 9 at 7:30pm in the campus theatre. Written by Martin McDonagh, the engaging and thoughtfully written dark comedy is directed and designed by Brad Ford, UW-WC Communications and Theatre Professor. David Gasperetti is the Assistant Director.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane is set in the small Irish village of Leenane, Connemara, in the early 1990’s.  The tale is about a domineering and manipulative mother, Mag Folan (played by Mary Wittmann, West Bend) who thwarts her spinster daughter, Maureen’s (played by Sharon Nieman, Cedarburg) only chance at love.  The Folan cottage is visited by Pato Dooley (played by Jaime Jastrab, Milwaukee) and his younger brother Ray (played by Christopher Minz, Milwaukee). Pato is a middle-aged construction worker fed up with having to live and work in England and disappointed by the limitations and loneliness of his life. The day-to-day sameness is tedious also for Ray, a non-threatening "bad boy".

After a gradual buildup in Act 1, the violence and drama escalate exponentially in Act 2.  The plot includes secrets and surprises that will keep you riveted in your seat until the final moments.  Beauty Queen of Leenane was nominated for an Olivier Award as Best Play for the London production and the 1998 Broadway production was nominated for six Tony awards, winning four.

UW-WC students, Scarlett Spagna and Ben Johnson are serving as understudies for Maureen Folan and Ray Dooley. Assisting in the production are Sue Gilbertson (Scenic Artist), Elizabeth Schroeder (Lighting), Michelle Nobbe and Sandra Retzlaff (Wardrobe). Crew members include: Gina Alwardt, Jill Barrow, and Jonelle Klukaczewski.
