India's Mars Mission Goes into Orbit

September 24, 2014

Astronomy Professor Dr. Swapnil Tripathi shares information about India's Mars Orbiter Mission.

Proud moment for India's Space Program. India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)Successfully enters into orbit around Mars. India becomes the first Asian nation to go into Mars' orbit and the first in the world to do it successfully in the first attempt. Indian space program accomplished this feat in a budget, which is less than what it cost to make the movie "Gravity".

United States' Mars Mission MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) also entered Mars' orbit 2 days ago.

MAVEN and MOM will work together to collect data to find out how Mars went from being a wet planet to being so dry and if life in some form is present on Mars or if it did sometime in the past.
