A relaxing evening of Winter Jazz is being presented at UW-Washington County (UWWC) on Friday, February 8, beginning at 7:30pm. The concert features The Paul Spencer Band of Milwaukee. The concert will be held in the campus theatre at 400 University Drive.
The Sheppard Express described the band’s music as “Great jazz with drive, sass and swing.” Says band leader Paul Spender, “We don’t play music that just rambles on. We like all of our music to be played in the groove.”
Performing for the first time as a drummer in 1958, Paul Spencer’s career has spanned more than four decades. His band, which began as a quartet, today contains a minimum of seven players – diverse in experience and age, come from a variety of musical backgrounds. Their music, which Paul describes as “R & B jazz”, flows very dynamically and rhythmically.
The band’s CDs include a 2003 recording, which was performed live from the Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee. In 2006, they recorded “Level Groove,” featuring twelve original compositions by Steve Lewandowski, the band’s guitar player. The band plays at various clubs throughout the Milwaukee area and has also played at Milwaukee’s Jazz in the Park summer series.
