Butschlick & Peterson named WCC Coaches of the Year

UWM at Washington County coaches, Debbie Butschlick and Roger Peterson were named WCC Tennis Coaches of the Year.  Both the men’s and women’s teams won the WCC state championship this year. Peterson, who is a Professor of Mathematics for the campus, became the first Women’s Tennis Coach in 1983. With a small hiatus from 1990-92, he has served as their coach ever since. Through the years, the Women’s team won the WCC championship in 1991, 2008 and 2011 and WCC State runner-up in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017. This is the third time that Peterson has received the Coach of the Year honor.

Debbie Butschlick, who serves as Athletic Director for the campus, became the Men’s and Women’s tennis coach in 1990. Since 1992, she and Peterson have team coached.  Through the years, the Men’s team was the WCC runner-up in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and WCC State runner up in 2012. This is the fifth time that Butschlick has been named WCC Coach of the Year for tennis.

UW-WC is a member of the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference (WCC), with athletic teams in soccer, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Athletes travel throughout the state of Wisconsin to compete with other UW colleges as well as non-conference college teams.

The Wildcats winning streak continues! UWM at Washington County Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams captured the 2018 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference State Tennis Tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison in a two day competition.  The Men’s Team won 19 out of 22 possible team points and the Women’s Team won 9 out of 14 possible team points.  This is the first time in the WCC history of Men’s tennis that the team was able to win the championship outright on the first day of competition.

The Men’s team was led by Matt Melsheimer #1 Singles & Doubles, Jordan Buchacher #2 Singles & Doubles, Charlie Mundinger #3 Singles and #1 Doubles, Lucas Gough #4 Singles & #2 Doubles, Brody Jossart #5 Singles & #3 Doubles, Alex Schmidt #6 Singles & #3 Doubles.

The Women’s Team was led by Meghan MacFarlane #1 Singles & Doubles, Kaytie Lighthizer #2 Singles & Doubles, Sammie Brown #3 Singles & #1 Doubles, Audra Brandenburg #4 Singles & #2 Doubles.

  • MacFarlane - won the quarter finals match at #1 Singles
  • Lighthizer – State Champion #2 Doubles – won the quarter finals match at #2 Singles
  • Brown – State Champion #3 Singles
  • Brandenburg – State Champion #4 Singles and #2 Doubles

This is the first time in campus history that both teams won the WCC State Tournament in the same year. The Women’s Tennis team last captured the State tournament in 2008, while the Men’s team took the Runner-up trophy that  year

2013 UW-WC Tennis Teams at State Competition

Men's and Women's Tennis teams practice Monday through Friday from 3:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.. The season begins the third week of March with games held in April and early May.

An organizational meeting is held in early March. Contact Athletic Director Deb Butschlick at 335-5238 or if you are interested in playing tennis for UWM at Washington County.
