Venere Lute Quartet at UW-WC on Friday, Nov. 18

Renaissance & Baroque Music
11/7/11

The Venere Lute Quartet will perform on Friday, November 18 at 7:30pm at UW-Washington County’s theatre.  While 400 years ago, it was relatively common to hear lutes of different sizes playing together, today, it is more of a rarity. The quartet plays music from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods, but only after pains-taking research and attention to musicological accuracy is taken.

Venere Lute’s members include Gail Gillispie, soprano lute; Douglas Freundlich, alto lute; Christopher Morrongiello, tenor lute and Phillip Rukavina, bass lute.  The quartet tours regularly, performing early music festivals and concert series. Members of the group came together while teaching and playing concerts at Lute Society of America workshops. They have three recordings including Sweet Division (2003), Palestrina’s Lute (2006) and Dutch Treats (2009).

Those interested in handmade wooden musical instruments, will also have the opportunity to visit “The Art of the Guitar” display in UW-WC’s art gallery. The exhibitdisplays the handiwork of West Bend native, Brian Eckert. Eckert has built seven guitars and several will be on display along with photographs and hand tools. He will be available before the concert and during intermission to answer any questions.

Tickets for Friday’s performance are $13 adults, $10 seniors (over 62) and youth (under 18).  Tickets may be purchased at the door (while supplies last) or in the main office between 8am and 5pm Monday through Thursday and 8am to 4:30pm on Friday. Reservations can be made by calling (262)-335-5208.  The University is located at 400 University Drive in West Bend.  Free parking is available.
