UW-Washington County’s soccer team came away with the Wisconsin Collegiate state championship after defeating UW-Fox Valley in an exciting double overtime play in Appleton on Saturday, October 19. Undefeated in the conference and with no team scoring more than one goal against them, UW-WC’s soccer coach, Jim Miller knew that UW Fox Valley was going to be a tough team to beat.
UW-Fox Valley had been UW-WC’s only loss (1-5) for the regular conference season. Since that loss, Miller made some changes by “moving players into different positions and changing the playing formation from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3.”
Game Highlights: UW-WC’s Alex Bello was the only one to score in the first half of the game. The second half of the game, however, went from 1-0 to 3-1 in the first 20 minutes with UW-Fox Valley mounting a brilliant comeback. UW-WC’s Derek Svein (assisted by Dom Christofilis) and Alex Bello (assisted by Austin Lemler) scored in the second half, bringing the game to a 3-3 tie, and forcing two 10 minute overtime periods. When neither team was able to score in the two overtime periods, a 5 point shoot-out was called to determine the outcome. Charlie Briet, blocked one shot, while Sean Sprtel, Derek Svein, Austin Lemler and Alex Bello all scored and UW-WC won the shootout (and the game) 4-2.
According to Coach Jim Miller, “I was very proud of the team’s tenacity and how they conducted themselves on the field. The victory could not have been accomplished without the moral support from the other UW-WC players off the field, and in that sense, it was a true team win.”
