Rio Bamba, a four-piece jazz band from Chicago, will kick off the Fine Arts series at The University of Wisconsin-Washington County (UW-WC) on Friday, September 20 with a concert at 7:30pm in UW-WC’s Theatre on the Hill. Enhancing the campus focus on Brazil with a fall lecture series, book discussion and photography display Rio Bamba will feature Brazilian music with its catchy dance rhythms along with other jazz music.
While classic Brazilian jazz, samba and bossa nova performed in the original Portuguese as well as in English may be this band’s forte, they fearlessly “color outside the lines.” Founded in 2005 by bass player/vocalist John Garvey, Rio Bamba turns up the electricity, figuratively and literally by ramping up tempos and using Garvey’s electric bass to add a touch of American rock/blues bravado without ever disrespecting the source material. Other band members include Maggie Vagle (vocals), Joel Martinez (percussion) and Craig Linenberger (guitar).
Tickets for Friday’s performance are $15 adults, $13 seniors (over 62) and youth (under 18). Tickets may be purchased at the door (while supplies last) or in the main office between 8am and 5pm Monday through Thursday and 8am to 4:30pm on Friday. Reservations can also be made by phoning (262)-335-5208 or emailing WSH-Tickets@uwc.edu. The University is located at 400 University Drive in West Bend. The theatre is located on the second floor of the campus. Free parking is available.
