Six popular restaurants will soon be serving up delicious fish and sides at UW-Washington County (UW-WC) as they compete for the coveted title of Best Fish Fry in Washington County. If you enjoy a good fish fry, then little compares to the opportunity of sampling fish from six different restaurants while also contributing to the scholarship program at the local campus. The popular event is planned for Thursday, October 17, with fish served between 4:30pm and 8:00pm in the campus gym. Adult tickets are $20 which includes fish and one side from each of the six restaurants. Children’s tickets (ages 5-12) are just $7.

Participating restaurants for this year’s Fish Fry Frenzy include: Barley Pop Pub and Restaurant (Germantown), Jug’s Hitching Post Saloon and Grill (Kohlsville), Mineshaft/Fox & Hounds Restaurants (Hartford & Hubertus), Riverside Brewery & Restaurant (West Bend), Timmer’s Resort (West Bend) and West Bend Lakes Golf Course-The Lakes Bar and Grille (West Bend).  Desserts will be provided by Sendik’s Food Markets.  Drink sponsors include: Riverside Brewery (microbrew beer and root beer), Jeff’s Spirits (domestic beer and wine), and 7-Up Bottling Company (soda and water).

Everyone who purchases a ticket will also have an opportunity to vote for their favorite fish fry as well as favorite side. Top rated restaurants will receive the People’s Choice award while a distinguished panel of judges will determine and present the judges’ choice awards.

This year’s panel of judges includes: Mader’s Restaurant (Milwaukee) Restaurant Manager and Head Chef;  WBKV’s Morning Show Host, Bob Bonenfant;  Sendik’s Food Market  (West Bend) Store Manager, Gerald Allison; and UW-Colleges & UW-Extension Chancellor, Ray Cross.

New this year, a “Dig Dug” sponsored by West Bend Sand and Gravel will have participants digging through a pool of sand to uncover some wonderful prizes, donated by area businesses. In addition to the delicious food and refreshments, local musician, Gary Cross will provide easy listening tunes. Hourly raffles and a silent auction will offer additional prizes.

All proceeds from the annual event will benefit the Washington County Campus Foundation and the HOPE Scholarship fund. The HOPE Scholarship fund is a special program created to help selected students with their educational expenses at UW-WC.   H.O.P. E. stands for “Helping Optimize Potential Excellence.”  According to Iva Thelen, Executive Director of the Washington County Campus Foundation, “last year’s Frenzy raised over $12,000 - which is now helping 12 students this fall with a $1,000 scholarship. This event directly impacts and supports financially challenged students in our community, and makes such an important difference in our most vital resource - our citizens,” Thelen said.
