According to Dr. Daniel Ackley, who directs both groups, compositions from the Russian masters will be presented. The WCYO will perform Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture" and Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain." The fun begins when the WCYO presents the Polonaise and Waltz from Tchaikovsky's opera, "Eugene Onegin”. UW-WC dance students, under the direction of Michael Mattek, will perform two dances.
Following intermission, the MSB will perform of the "Dies irae" from Verdi's "Requiem" which was arranged by Dr. Ackley and will feature eight trumpets. Four of the trumpets will be off stage, giving the audience a very powerful emotive experience. Next, the MSB will perform Mussorgsky’s masterpiece, "Pictures from an Exhibition,” regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of the Russian classical literature. This composition will be complemented with a variety of artwork created by UW-WC students, under the direction of Josh Lesniak, Art Professor at UW-WC.
Dr. Ackley invites everyone to attend for as he describes it, “This is no ordinary concert.” With several of the works often performed by symphony orchestras. The WCYO has 28 student musicians and eight coaches. The MSB has 37 musicians, 14 of whom are UW-WC students.
