UW-WC Announces Auditions for “An Inspector Calls”

Cast & Crew Needed for Spring Production
1/5/12

UW-Washington County will be holding auditions for the spring production of An Inspector Calls on Wednesday, January 25 at 7pm in the campus theatre. The cast for this three-act drama includes three leading men and three leading women. Area residents, ages 18 and over, that are interested in performing are encouraged to audition. The play will be directed and designed by Brad Ford, UW-WC Communications and Theatre Professor, who is also in need of volunteers for building the set as well as with technical and behind-the-scenes work. College credit can be earned for performing or doing crew work for the show.

The male characters include: Arthur, a portly man in his 50s; Gerald, an attractive young man in his 20-30s, and Eric, a nervous, assertive but shy man in his 20-30s. Female characters include: Edna, a pretty maid in her 20s (small role); Sybil, (Arthur’s wife) in her 50s; and Sheila, a bubbly young woman in her 20s who is engaged to Gerald.

An Inspector Calls is a classic in mid 20th century English theatre.  The story takes place on a single night in 1912 and focuses on the prosperous Birling family, who live in a comfortable home in Brumley, an industrial city in England. The family is visited by Inspector Goole, who questions the family about the suicide of a young working-class woman, Eva Smith.  Over the course of the evening, the entire family, is questioned by Goole, and are exposed to have been responsible for the young woman’s exploitation, abandonment and social ruin, effectively leading to her death. Written by J. B. Priestley, the production was first performed in Moscow in 1945 and has been praised as a fierce critique of the hypocrisies of Victorian/Edwardian society and an expression of Priestley’s own Socialist political principles.

Four performances of An Inspector Calls are planned for Friday and Saturday evenings, March 2-3 and 9-10 at 7:30pm. All performances will be in the campus theatre, located on the second floor of the campus. For ticket reservations, phone 262-335-5208 or email: jean.kelley@uwc.edu
