8/26/08

Beginning this fall, UW-Washington County students will be able to take advantage of an on-site mental health counselor.  Kimberly Kunz, a Licensed Professional Counselor is joining the Student Services staff and is “excited to be starting at UW-Washington County and meeting students, faculty and staff.”  Kunz will be providing assistance to students with school or personal struggles as well as mental health and substance abuse issues.

Licensed to provide counseling in both the substance abuse and mental health field, Kunz will provide both group and individual treatment.  Her experience spans ages from adolescents to adults and includes a variety of issues, including: substance abuse, anxiety, relationship struggles, depression, adjustment struggles, and other mental health and substance abuse disorders. Her licenses include: LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), NCC (National Certified Counselor), CSAC (Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor) and CS-IT (Clinical Supervisor in Training). Her educational background includes a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from UW-Milwaukee as well as a Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Marquette University.

Kunz, who works through Genesis Behavioral Services in West Bend, said she “believes that students will benefit from having someone to talk to, whether it is about struggles at home, at school, or with their mental health or substance abuse.  I want students to feel comfortable seeking extra support from a professional, as well as providing students with information on community resources they can utilize.”

Martha Nelson, Assistant Dean of Student Services, noted that “at a time when quality counseling services are expensive and often involve a long wait, we are very fortunate to be able to provide wonderful support for students right on our campus.”  The mental health counseling services are supported through student fees and support from the UW-WC Student Government Association. Kunz will be available to students Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Her office will be located in Room 123 in Student Services.   Students can walk in during her office hours or contact Student Services to schedule an appointment.
