UW-Washington County is hosting three lectures this spring that will complete the Community Lecture Series, “Sports – Beyond the Game”. The lectures are free and open to the public. The dates for the one hour Wednesday evening lectures are: March 31, April 14 and April 21. Each lecture begins at 7:00pm in Room 228. No reservations are needed. The popular lecture series welcomes area adults as well as high school and college students.
Dr. Jennifer Earl-Boehm is the speaker for the first lecture on Wednesday, March 31. Dr. Boehm earned her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University and is currently an Assistant Professor of Human Movement Science at UW-Milwaukee. Her lecture is titled “Sports Medicine,” and she will discuss how to avoid common athletic injuries as well as new technologies to repair injuries.
Dr. Michael Nofz, Professor of Sociology at UW-Fond du Lac, will speak on Wednesday, April 14. The topic is “Female Equality in Sport”. Dr. Nofz will discuss Title IX, Affirmative Action and Women in Sports in a talk that will be both informative and entertaining. Dr. Nofz will discuss how some female coaches are actually at a disadvantage since Title IX as well as the prospects for women’s sports programs to become stronger in popularity and financial backing. Nofz will also discuss how women’s sports programs reflect historical changes in our ideas about gender.
For the final lecture on April 21, Tim Van Vooren, sports reporter for Fox 6 News, will present, “The Role of the Sports Reporter.” A graduate of Marquette University, VanVooren will discuss how the connection between the athlete or team and the fan can be both a blessing and a curse.
