West Bend: UW-Washington County will be holding auditions for the spring production of Don’t Hug Me! on Thursday, January 30 at 7:00pm in the campus theatre. The cast for this award-winning musical comedy by Phil Olson, includes three men and two women. Singing talent is needed, along with a good sense of comic timing and ability to speak in an “up north” accent. Area residents, ages 18 and over, interested in performing, are encouraged to audition.
First produced in California in 2003, the musical will be directed and designed by Professor Brad Ford, UW-WC Communications and Theatre Department, who is also in need of volunteers for set building, technical, and behind-the-scenes work. College credit can be earned for performing or doing crew work for the show.
Cast members include: Gunner and Clara Johnson, co-owners of the Bunyan bar; Bernice Lundstrom, a pretty, young dreamy waitress at the Bunyan; Aarvjd Gisselson, a slick fast-talking Karaoke salesman and Kanute Gunderson, an obviously full-of-himself business owner.
Don’t Hug Me includes such memorable songs as “I’m a Walleye Woman in a Crappie Town,” “Upside Down in My Pickup Truck” and “I Wanna Go to the Mall of America.” The story takes place on the coldest day of the year in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota. The cantankerous bar owner, Gunner Johnson, wants to sell his business and move to Florida while his wife and former Winter Carnival Bunyan Queen, Clara, wants to stay put. Bernice, the pretty waitress, wants to pursue a singing career while her fiancé, Kanute Gunderson, wants her to stay home. It’s a battle of wits and wills, and when a fast-talking salesman, Aarvid Gisselsen, arrives on the scene promising to bring romance into their hum-drum lives through the “magic” of karaoke, all heck breaks loose.
Four performances of Don’t Hug Me! are planned for Friday and Saturday evenings, February 28-March 1 and March 7-8 at 7:30pm. All performances will be in the campus theatre, located on the second floor of the campus. The play is approximately two hours in length and is appropriate for all audiences.
