“After the Storm” - Benefit Concert Planned at UW-WC

Bluegrass Bands to Perform on July 24 for Post Tornado Aid
7/8/13

UW-Washington County will present “After the Storm” – a bluegrass concert on Wednesday, July 24 in the campus theatre from 7pm to 9pm.  The concert will feature the Big Cedar Bluegrass Band and the Roller Mills String Band. In addition, members of the Mecan River Ramblers will also join the two bands on stage for this performance.

The purpose of the bluegrass concert is to raise money for post tornado aid to Moore, Oklahoma. The town of Moore, Oklahoma was hit by a devastating EF5 tornado on May 20. Countless homes and two elementary schools were destroyed.

Dale Palecek, a member of the Badgerland Bluegrass Music Association and the Roller Mills String Band, asked 15 bluegrass bands with Wisconsin ties to each donate a recorded song for a CD. Proceeds from the CD sales will be used to help rebuild the music programs at Plaza Tower and Briarwood Elementary schools in Moore, Oklahoma. The July 24th concert will be the official release of “After the Storm,” a CD featuring 15 tracks of bluegrass music to help with this fundraising effort.   “As Moore, Oklahoma rebuilds, I felt it was important to make sure the grade school children who were affected by the tornado could have some joy, so the proceeds of the CD will help to bring music back to their schools,” said Palecek.

Doors for the benefit concert open at 6:30 pm.  Admission is free, with goodwill offerings for the Moore, Oklahoma music programs accepted at the door.  In addition to the CD, many of the bands donating a recording will be part of a concert series planned for late this summer and fall.

“After the Storm” is made possible by a grant from the Badgerland Bluegrass Music Association. The CD features not only bluegrass bands from Southeastern Wisconsin, but also nationally known bluegrass acts with ties to Wisconsin. Bands who donated recordings include: Beef Tea, Big Cedar, The Burie Family, Collin O'Brien Stringy Band, Fairland Bluegrass, Front Porch Boys, Genesee Ridge, Hard Ryde, KR Bluegrass, Monroe Crossing, Pickin' Up Speed, Paul Bast, Red Star Express, Roller Mills String Band, and the Sawdust Symphony.

UW-Washington County is located at 400 University Drive in West Bend.  The theatre is located on the second floor of the campus. Free parking is available.
