What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan is a service which allows you to borrow books, copies of journal articles, etc., which are not available in the UW-Washington County Library.  Please discuss your information needs with a Librarian; we may be able to find an alternate resource that will satisfy your requirements.

Who may use Interlibrary Loan?
Currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff at UW-Washington County are encouraged to use Interlibrary Loan services. Members of the public may use the online catalog and other library resources on-site, but must use the Interlibrary Loan services of their public library.

How do I make a request?
All requests for interlibrary loan should be entered into
ILLiad. Click the hyperlink to log in to our Interlibrary loan system. Users should enter their campus ID # as the login and their last name (in lower case) as the password. You may use the menu options to track the status of your requests.

What may be borrowed?
We will make every effort to fill requests for all types of material. Recently published books, entire issues of periodicals, non-circulating items, media items, dissertations and rare books may be difficult to borrow, but we will try.

How long does Interlibrary Loan take?
Most materials arrive within 2-14 days after the request is sent.  Please plan ahead and request items early.  The process slows down during periods of heavy demand during the last half of the semester.  You may specify that you would like to be notified by phone or e-mail as soon as the material arrives. ILL materials may be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

How long may I keep the material?
The loan period for books is established by the lending library and may vary from 2-4 weeks. The due date is indicated on the paper label on the front cover. Overdue fines are $1 per day. When a periodical article is requested the lending library sends a photocopy which the borrower may keep.

Can I renew?
Some lending libraries allow Interlibrary Loan materials to be renewed, others do not. Renewals can be made through your personal record in ILLiad.

How many items may I borrow?
In general, we ask you to limit your requests to 5 per paper, speech, etc.  This is negotiable, however.  Let us know if you are having difficulty finding materials in our Library.

What does it cost?
There is usually no direct cost to you. The normal ILL cost is absorbed through tuition/fees which is why it is available only to currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff. However, if a lending library charges additional fees, they will be passed on to the borrower.

What if I need a Rush Request?
If you wish to pay for a "Request Express" and if the item you need is available at UW-Madison, you may ask for this service.  The cost is $10.00.  There is no charge if the item cannot be shipped within 24 hours.
