Description

Dr. Chris Yogerst will be presenting "Hollywood and the 1941 Senate Investigation into Motion Picture War Propoganda." In the years leading up to the United States' involvement in WWII, there was a strong isolationist opposition to the war that became co-opted by a range of fascists, anti-Semites, and xenophobes. In the fall of 1941, a Senate sub-committee tightened the screws on Hollywood for their increasing number of anti-Nazi and anti-authoritarian films. This move on behalf of the isolationist Senators backfired spectacularly in what became a formal hearing by day and shootout in the press by night.
