UWC Department of History

Mentor Policy

A major responsibility of the UWC Department of History is to assist new tenure-track tenure appointments in becoming familiar with departmental professional expectations, policies, and procedures.  The UWC Department of History accepts the responsibility for assisting new faculty to succeed in their careers as a member of the department.  The following policy is established to ensure these goals.

            1.            It will be the responsibility of the Department Chair, with the advice of the

Executive Committee, to appoint a departmental mentor for each new

                        tenure-track appointment.

            2.            Mentor appointments will be made as soon as a tenure-track appointment

commences and will continue until a tenure decision is made or until

                        termination of the appointment.

            3.            Mentor appointments will try to match academic specialization and

geographic location as much as possible.

            4.            Mentors must be tenured members of the Department of History.

            5.            Mentors will assist new faculty in mastering department policies and

                        procedures.

            6.            Mentors will assist new faculty in understanding department teaching,

                        research, and governance expectations.

            7.            Mentors will be encouraged to maintain informal contacts and to be

available to assist new faculty in meeting departmental requirements and

                        expectations.

            8.            The Department Chair will be responsible for monitoring the mentor

                        program.
