Instructional Academic Staff Hiring

And Position Conversion Policy

Ref:  Senate #37

Statement:  It shall be the goal of the UWC Department of History, when it is necessary to hire Instructional Academic Staff, to hire only those candidates that have been screened under a process that replicates as closely as possible the hiring of tenure-track faculty.  The department recognizes that in exceptional circumstances this may not be possible, but that every effort should be made to hire the most qualified faculty for limited-term appointments.  The department also recognizes that Instructional Academic Staff may be qualified for appointment to a tenure track position at a later date. To further these goals, the department establishes the following policy:

Hiring Instructional Academic Staff:

            1.   Whenever it is necessary to hire Instructional Academic Staff for 60% or

more, the Department Chair shall develop a position description after

consultation with the campus and the Department Executive Committee.

            2.   Whenever possible for positions of 60% or more, a national search for

Instructional Academic Staff shall be conducted to identify a qualified pool of

      candidates.

3.   After the deadline for applications, the Executive Committee shall review all

the files and develop a pool of top candidates to be submitted to the campus

      appointments committee.

4.   When conducting a national search for tenure-track positions, the applicant

pool developed for that search may be used to develop an Instructional

Academic Staff pool if the position descriptions are similar.

5.   Campuses are expected to absorb the cost of interviewing candidates, but in

extraordinary circumstances department funds may be used in the hiring

      process.

Conversion of IAS Positions to Tenure Track:

            1.   When the campus and department agree that an Instructional Academic Staff

position should be converted to a tenure track position, the Department Chair

in consultation with the Executive Committee, will determine if the

Department will request a Waiver of Search under the provisions of Senate

Policy 37 III and recommend that the IAS member holding the position be

                  recommended for a probationary appointment.

            2.    Instructional Academic Staff who have been hired after a national search, meet the

department standards for hiring at the Assistant Professor level, and have

demonstrated successful teaching and professional development shall be eligible for

the position when it is converted to tenure track.

            3.    The Department Chair and Executive Committee shall continuously monitor all

Instructional Academic Staff positions for possible conversion to tenure-track

                   positions.
