Professional Development Administrative Guidelines
In order to implement the U.W. Department of History Professional Development Policy, the U.W. Department of History Executive Committee adopts the following administrative guidelines.
Rules:
1. All members of the department are eligible to request support for professional
development activities.
2. Requests for professional development funds must be made prior to the first
Monday in January for monies to be expended during the current academic
year.
3. Professional development requests must include a brief outline of specific
professional development plans.
4. By the end of the fiscal year, faculty members receiving funds will provide the
professional development committee with a brief report on activities carried
out under the grant.
5. The maximum amount granted to an individual faculty member will not
exceed $300 in any academic year. (except as in #8 below)
6. No member of the department’s professional development committee will
participate in the review of his/her proposal.
Procedures:
1. Copies of professional development grant proposals will be sent to each
member of the department’s professional development committee.
2. Each member of the professional development committee will review all
grant proposals (except his or her own).
3. Each member of the committee will rank order the grant proposals based on
the “Expenditure Priorities” established by the department’s Professional
Development Policy.
4. The department chair will develop a master ranking of all grant proposals
based on the committee’s recommendations.
5. Before final notification of the committee recommendations, all members of
the committee will be given the opportunity to review the final ordering and
any member may request discussion of any grant proposal. At this time a
revised order may be developed by the professional development committee.
6. All members of the department who submit proposals will be notified of the
committee’s recommendation by the chair of the department.
7. In the case where funding is not recommended, a faculty member may
request an explanation.
8. Should the total funding requested not exceed the budget, the professional
development committee may solicit new proposals or reallocate the
remaining monies to those whose proposals have been funded.
