UW-WC’s Music Department To Perform Two May Concertsees to be Awarded

Free Admission to May Concerts – Community Welcome!

Two spring concerts sponsored by the Music Department at UW-Washington County are being planned in the campus theatre. A combined Washington County Youth Orchestra and Moraine Symphonic Band concert is scheduled for Sunday, May 5 at 1pm in the campus theatre, while the Moraine Chorus concert is scheduled for 2pm on Sunday, May 12.  The campus theatre is on the second floor of the campus, located at 400 University Drive (exit from Hwy. 33) in West Bend. Admission is free to both concerts, with free will offerings encouraged.  No reservations are necessary.

The May 5th concert is in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of two of the greatest Romantic composers:  Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner.  The Moraine Symphonic band will perform Director Daniel Ackley’s arrangement of the “Dies irae” from Verdi’s “Requiem”and “Ride of the Valkyries” from Wagner’s “Die Walkure.”  Arrangements from Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung” will also be performed, including two small arrangements of Dr. Ackley’s.  Musicians in the band are a combination of UW-WC students and adults from the community.  The band is open to any area musicians who want to continue playing their instrument and performing.

The Youth Orchestra will perform the opening to R. Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra”, a suite from “Tannhauser” by Wagner, “Caro nome” from “Rigoletto”, by Verdi, and the “Die Meistersinger” overture by Wagner.  Although named the Washington County Youth Orchestra, participation in the orchestra is not limited to students living in this county alone. The Orchestra has members from most surrounding counties participate, including Fond du Lac Dodge, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, and Sheboygan counties. Participation in the orchestra is by audition.

UW-Washington County’s Moraine Chorus annual Mother’s Day concert will include a madrigal, some folksong arrangements by Brahms and Mendelssohn, and several Spirituals.  The concert will also feature several
UW-WC students who are majoring in music. Mallory Mercier will perform the first movement of Brahms Violin Sonata in G, with Music Professor Peter Gibeau. In addition, soprano, Moriah Michalak and tenor, Eric Stein will perform a duet from Donizetti’s opera Elixir of Love.

The Moraine Chorus meets weekly for practice and is directed by UW-WC Music Professor, Dr. Peter Gibeau. UW-Washington County students as well as community members are welcome to join the Chorus.
