COACH'S GAME NOTES:
Sunday, Feb. 17, UW-WC vs UW-Waukesha
We had a
tough time finding the basket in the first half. But Waukesha
didn't, they shot 62% in the half and 57 for the game.
Our
goal at half time was to show the people in the crowd what kind of
team we really are. The team responded well and played very hard in
the second half. We scored some points and ended up shooting 42% for
the game - which was an improvement over the 33% for the first half.
We shot 24% from behind the arch. In the first half when we got
down, we started taking a lot of 3's. We got in that mode where we
thought we had to make up the points in a hurry. What we really
needed to do was work the ball better and get better looks at the
basket. However, another problem we had was turnovers. We had 12
first half turnovers and 11 in the second half. So working the ball
wasn't working either. I'm very proud of how the guys responded in
the second half. We could have just quit, but no one did. We had a
chance to play in the championship game and that is a big thing for
us. We have a game tomorrow, Monday the 18th at Alverno College,
against Milw. Area Tech. College. Game time is 8:00pm. I hope we
have enough energy and will to rebound from Saturday's loss and play
well against MATC.
The
winner of that game will play the winner of UW-Waukesha and UW-Fond
du LAC on Wednesday. The winner of the Wednesday game goes on to the
WJCAA STATE TOURNAMENT on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday, Feb. 16 UW-WC vs UW-Marathon
THIS WAS A TOUGH DEFENSIVE GAME. THE
WILDCATS JUMPED OUT TO A 14 TO 2 RUN TO START THE GAME AND NEEDED
EVERY POINT. UP THREE AT HALF WE TOLD THE GUYS WE JUST NEEDED TO WIN
THE SECOND HALF AND IT WAS OVER - WELL WE DIDN'T WIN THE SECOND
HALF, BUT IT WAS CLOSE ENOUGH. DEFENSIVELY WE HUSTLED WELL. TIM
GOODEARLE HIT A 3 WITH A MINUTE LEFT TO PUT US UP 1. THEN MARATHON
CAME DOWN AND HIT 2 FREE-THROWS TO TIE THE GAME AT 54. THEN MARATHON
CAME OUT IN A FULL COURT PRESS AND AARON LOFY TOOK A PASS FROM
ERICKSON AND WENT HALF COURT TO SCORE THE GO AHEAD POINTS.
Monday, Feb. 11, UW-WC vs. UW-Manitowoc
Wildcats Win playoff game with UW Marinette. Go to the
Tournament!
UW-Washington County survived a close first half and
outscored Marinette by 10 points in the second
half to win. We started out strong and jumped out to a 10
point lead early, only to let Marinette back
into the game late in the first half. 12 first half
turnovers helped the opponent get back into the game.
Good shooting by Marinette also helped them get back into the
game. Marinette shot 55 % in the first
half. Jordan Young had 12 first half points to help their
cause. Aaron Lofy had 10 first half points for
the Wildcats. At half, we talked about taking care of the
ball and working together as a team. We had
well balanced scoring for the game. We ended the game with
four people in double figures. Matt Erickson
ended the game with another double/double. Alex Aisbet and
Josh Krueger also had well balanced
games. Tim Goodearle and Aaron Lofy did a great job at
leading the offense. The real story was our
defense though. We held a very good offensive team to 59
points. That took some great team defense.
UW-Washington
will play UW Marathon at the Conference tournament on Friday
(2/15/08).
Thursday, Feb. 7 UW-WC vs UW-Manitowoc
Wildcats are a win away from finishing second in the Eastern
Division.
We wanted to start
fast in this game and we did. We jumped out to a 10 to 4 run in the
first two minutes
of play and never
looked back. I was worried before the game because our guys seemed
too loose. I
did not want us to
take Manitowoc lightly. We did a great job of working the ball on
offense and we
knocked down our
shots. We are a good shooting team when we work the ball well and
don't force
shots. Matt E. &
Matt P. each had 11 first half points to lead the Wildcats to the
half time break.
At half, we talked a lot about focusing on playing our game in the
second half. We wanted to work our offensive
sets and not
have a let down. We did a good job of that in the second half and
we kept a high level of play going. Matt Erickson had another
double/double. Josh Krueger had 15 rebounds to lead the Cats in
that stat. I thought we played very well as a team.
Tomorrow, the Wildcats travel to UW Sheboygan to play a make-up
game. Game time is 5:00 p.m. If we win this game we capture a
share of second place in our division. We would tie with UW
Marinette and have to play a tie-breaker game next week.
Monday, Jan. 28 UW-WC vs UW-Rock
UW-WC:
Josh Krueger 9 (1/3), Justin Schneider 11 (1/3) Alex Aisbet 10
points, 11 rebounds & 10 assists, Aaron Lofy 20, Tim Goodearle 17
(2/3's), Matt Erickson 12 & 12 rebounds, Matt Parrent 24 (2/3's),
Nolen Jensen 11.
Saturday, Jan. 26 UW-WC vs UW-Richland
Wildcats win four in a row. We will try to make it five on Monday.
The
Wildcats out rebounded Richland Center by 19 boards. But the big
stat for the Cats' was assists. The team had a game high of 21
assists. We worked the ball very well as a team and you can tell by
the team assists. Erickson had 6, Lofy had 5 and Tim Goodearle had
4. As the season gets close to
tournament time, we
need to come together and play great team ball.
We led by 13 pts at
half, but didn't shut the door on Richland until late in the game.
Richland got hot in the second half and made a strong run on us, but
we were able to hold them off with some fast breaks and defensive
rebounds. Our goal was to push the tempo of this game. We thought
at half time that Richland liked to hang around the ball after we
got a defensive rebound, so we pushed the ball. Our post player.
Alex Aisbet did a great job running the court. He scored most of
his 16 points that way. Matt Erickson was 8 of 10 for shooting and
led the Wildcats with 18 points. Matt Parrent and Aaron Lofy scored
15 and 14 points for us.
The Wildcats travel to UW Rock County on Monday. Game time is 8:00
pm. Then we play
UW Baraboo -at
Baraboo on Wednesday. On Saturday the Cats host Western Tech. The
game time is
3:00 pm. We
will be honoring the parents of our athletes during this game.
Wednesday, Jan. 23 UW-WC vs UW-Fox Valley
The Wildcats
over-come second half struggles to beat Fox Valley.
The Wildcats came out strong in the first half. We
controlled the tempo of the game and did a great jobworking the ball
and knocking down our shots. The 'Cats shot 57% (13/23) and 67%
from the three point line (6/9). Matt Erickson had 15 first half
points to lead the way. Fox Valley put their best defender on
Matt Parrent
and that helped open the door for other scorers.
We had a much more difficult time scoring in the second
half. We had some good looks - just couldn't
finish the shots. Fox Valley out rebounded us in the second
half. They ended the game with 13 offensive boards and those added
opportunities added to points for the Cyclones. It was a three
point game with just under a minute to go with the Wildcats up. Two
big stops by the Wildcats and two free-throw by
Josh Krueger, and a
break-away dunk by Matt Erickson sealed the win for us.
Josh was 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. We played a great
first half and a not so good second half, but more importantly we
came away with a win. It is not easy winning on the road at any
level. So we will take it. The Wildcats are home on Saturday
against cross division rivals Richland Center. Richland is
currently in second place in the Western Division. This will be a
good game to come and see. GT 3:00pm.
Saturday, Jan. 19 UW-WC vs UW-Marathon
Wildcats
go to 9 & 7 overall with a home win over UW Marathon.
UW Marathon is
leading the Western Division with a 6 & 0 record. They are 11 & 3
overall.
The Wildcats led at half 34 to 27. We played a lot of zone
in the first half and threw Marathon off a little.
Marathon was 7 for
28 from the 3-point line. We played our zone pretty good and we
mixed it up
between a 2-3 and a 1-3-1. Once they figured out the 2-3, we
changed things up. We did a good job
getting a hand up on their shooters and we did not give them
a clean look at the basket. Alex had 7 of
his nine rebounds in the first half. Matt Erickson was 5 for
5 shooting in the first half and had 13 points.
The second half was a lot like the first half. The Wildcats
did a good job working the ball when they had
it in the half court, but had 13 second half turnovers to
which gave Marathon a lead in the beginning of the second half. We
didn't even get a shot of the first 5 times down the court. The
Wildcats bounced back and took the lead midway through the half.
With under two minutes left in the game Marathon had to foul and the
we knocked down our free-throws to seal the win.
We play
UW Fox at Fox Valley - Monday. The Lady Wildcats play at 6:00 pm and
the men play at 8:00 pm. This is an important game for the
Wildcats. At 5-4 in the division we don't have room for any more
losses.
Wednesday, Jan. 16 UW-WC vs. UW-Fond du Lac
Wildcats are back on track. Win Big at home, 79 to 34
UW Fond du Lac was not at full strength tonight. They lost a
couple of kids for various reasons. Early in
the game we took advantage of some miss-matches and jumped
out to a 37 to 19 lead. Josh Krueger
was 5 for 7 shooting with 10 rebounds. Seven of those boards
were offensive rebounds. Matt Erickson
had yet another double-double, 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats scored 20 points off second
chance opportunities and 18 points off of steals. Matt
Parrent was 3 of 6 from the three point line and ended with 14
points. Tim Goodearle did a nice job distributing the ball and led
the team with 6 assists. Overall, the Wildcats played a very sound
game. We wanted to continue to work our game on both sides of the
court in the second half. We actually played better in the second
half.
The Wildcats are home on Saturday against UW Marathon.
Marathon leads the Western Division at 6-0.
Then we are back
in our division with a road game against UW Fox Valley. This is a
big contest for us and could have tournament implications. Game
time is 8:00 p.m., on January 23rd.
Saturday, Jan. 12 UW-WC vs UW-Waukesha
Close
game for the Wildcats. Loss 69 to 64 to division leaders Waukesha
The UW-Washington County Wildcats played a very good game against UW
Waukesha, but came up short. This was our most cohesive game that
we have played all year. We worked the ball very well and played as
a team. I'm very proud of how tough we fought. UW Waukesha is a
tough team, a win over them would have been great - but if we
continue to play at this level we still can make a run at second
place in our division. It will be tough - but it can be done. We
played very good team ball in the first half and were leading at
half 35 to 29.
We new UW Waukesha would make a hard run at us in the second
half. At half time we talked a lot about answering their runs and
for the most part we did. Mid-way through the second half Waukesha
went on a 6-0 run and went up 1 point. We did answer the run and
the game was back and forth the rest of the way.
With 9 sec. left in the game the Wildcats were down 3 and had
a chance to tie, but Waukesha's
Alton Jackson stole the ball and scored to put Waukesha up 5
and seal the victory. The Wildcats have
a very important
game on Wednesday against UW Fond du Lac. Fond du Lac beat the
Wildcats earlier in the season, at Fondy, 59 to 68. A win at home
can get us back on the right path.
Thursday, Jan. 10 UW-WC vs. UW-Marshfield
Over-time win for the Wildcats!
The Wildcats started out slow in the first half, against a
very active Marshfield team. Marshfield had nine
second chance points in the first half to help them lead by
seven at the break. Alex Aisbet help the
Wildcats stay close by scoring 6 points in the half. Justin
Hansen was on fire for Marshfield scoring 12 of his 29 points in the
first half.
In the second half, all of the Wildcats got involved in the
getting the Cats back into the game. Justin
Schneider hit two big threes early in the second half to stop
a small run by Marshfield. Then Matt Parrent hit 4 of his 5 threes
in the half. Aaron Lofy hit a 3 pointer to tie the game with 2
seconds left on the clock. That sent the game into overtime. Aaron
was clutch down the stretch hitting two 3's and shooting 3 for 4
from the free-throw line. Alex also hit two big free-throws in
overtime. Matt Erickson had another double double with 11 points
and 12 rebounds. Justin Hansen hit 29 points against us, but he
missed a game winning free-throw at the end of the game. The Cats
hit their free-throws when we needed them.
Tuesday, Jan. 8 UW-WC vs UW-Marinette
Tough
Loss for the Wildcats: The wildcats played a good game tonight
at UW Marinette, but we were not able to beat a very hot shooting
Marinette team. Marinette shot 50% from the field and 43% from
outside the arch. We played a pretty good game tonight but couldn't
make the big play when we needed to. At times we executed our
offense very well and other times we forced it a little. We were
down 28 to 38 with 20 seconds left in the half and we set up play.
Lofy hit a big three right before half to close the gap to 7.
In the second half,
we started strong and took the led at the 14:00 minute mark. But
Marinette answered with a little run of their own and then the lead
was back and forth. The Wildcats regained the lead with a little
over four minutes remaining -but was not able to hold on. With
under two minutes left, we were forced to foul and Marinette did a
good job of hitting free-throw at the end. Matt Erickson had a
double double to
help lead the Wildcats.
Saturday, Jan. 5 UW-WC vs Alumni
The Wildcats were
up 11 points at half time, 43 to 32, over the Alumni. We played a
very good first half.
We worked the ball
very well on offense and knocked down some big shots. Matt Erickson
had 10 points and Matt Christian hit two threes to help us jump out
ahead. Josh Dahlen hit three threes to help the Alumni stay close.
Jared Bublitz hit a shot at the half time buzzer to make things
exciting for the crowd and to keep the Alumni close.
We knew the Alumni
team had a lot of fire power and could get hot at any time, and they
did in the second half. Travis Kearns hit 13 of his 17 points in
the second half. Jesse Hayhurst hit 9 second half points to help
the Alumni keep the game close. This was the best played Alumni
game I have been a part of. We played very well and the alumni team
did a great job! Matt Erickson and Alex Aisbet each had double
-doubles for the Cats. The Wildcats travel to UW Marinette on
Tuesday. Game time is 7:00 pm.
Thursday, Jan. 3 UW-WC vs McHenry College
We were down
thirteen points in the first half, but could have been even very
easily. We worked the
ball well, but
couldn't get our shots to fall. We played them about as tough as we
could have.
The second half we
continued to play tough, physical ball, but we were wore down
somewhat from the
first half. We did
not work the ball as well offensively. We lost Josh Krueger early
in the first
half and we were
not able to rotate our players as well as we would have liked.
This was a good
game to open up with because the talent level was very high and we
were pushed hard
the whole game.
Now we can build on the pluses and improve upon the sloppy ball play
in the second half. A lot of that is conditioning and we hope to
gain that back soon.
Our next game is
home against UW-WC Alumni on Saturday. Girl Wildcats play at 12:00
noon and the
guys play at 3:00.
Then next week we are back in our division. We play UW Marinette on
Tuesday.
Game time is 7:00,
at Marinette.
Wednesday, Dec. 12 UW-WC vs UW-Sheboygan
The Wildcats
finished the first semester strong with a win against Sheboygan. We
finished the season at 4 wins and 2 losses, behind UW Fond du Lac at
5 and 1 and UW Waukesha at 6 and 0. We knew UW -Sheboygan was down
a little this year. Our goal for the game was to play fundamentally
sound basketball for 40 minutes. We knew we would be able to rotate
a lot and we wanted to play good ball no matter what the rotation
was.
Matt Erickson had a
great game missing only one shot the entire game. Matt Christian
had a season best of 11 points and Alex Aisbet came off the bench
and scored 15. Our defense has played strong all year. We held
Sheboygan to 11 points each half.
The athletes now
have to concentrate on final exams, which start on Friday. The
Wildcats will get back into action on the 3rd of January when they
travel to McHenry CC. Game time is 7:15 pm.
Saturday, Dec. 8 UW-WC vs Manitowoc
It is
always good to get a win on the road. We had 10 people make the
scoring column. We were also able to get a solid rotation going and
get everyone important minutes. Manitowoc has potential to be a
pretty good team. McCarty hit 17 points on us and Sam Chone hit
16. The Wildcats were able to pick up the tempo and get some good
transition baskets. We also did a great job working the basketball
around and getting everyone an opportunity to score. It was fun
watching our offense work the ball today. We jumped out to a 22 to
5 lead midway through the first half and didn't look back.
Our defense is playing very well. We held Manitowoc to 50 points,
10 points under our goal. That was great. Aaron Lofy had 4 steals
and Matt Parrent had 3. Josh Krueger had a good first half five
points to start us off. Matt Erickson had 6 rebounds and continues
to rebound well. Nolen Jenson made the scoring column with 5
points. Tim Goodearle led our team with 13 points. Our last game
of the first
semester is on
Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. (12/12/07). The time was changed from
8:00pm to 7:00pm.
Monday, Dec. 3 UW-WC vs Milwaukee Tech:
In the first
half we did a nice job of working the ball and looking inside to our
post players. Josh Krueger had 9 points in the first half to lead
the Wildcats. Josh also did a nice job rebounding. We did a great
job of spreading the ball around. We had four people in double
figures and another with 8 points. When we worked our offense good
things happened for us in the first half. We had too many turnovers
in the second half and did not get as many opportunities to work the
ball around. When we did, we got some good looks at the basket
In the second half, MATC's Mims got hot and scored 18 of his 35
points. He hit 6/3's in the game. He shot most of them with a
solid hand in his face. He has good elevation and knocked down his
shots. He had one of the best games I've seen from any athlete at
this level. I guess the good news is even with his great game and
our own 23 turnovers we still had a solid chance of winning this
game. The guys played as hard as I've seen them play all year. If
we can keep that intensity up and keep getting better, we'll be
O.K.
Wednesday, Nov. 28 UW-WC vs UW-Fox Valley:
Once again, the
Wildcats defense steps up and helps us win at home. Offensively we
did a great job when we worked our offense and took care of the
ball. We shot 47% from the field. But, our unforced turnovers hurt
us, limiting our offensive opportunities in the game. We only
attempted 45 shots. We normally shoot between 50 & 60 shots a
game. We had 10 first-half turnovers and 13 second-half turnovers.
Mitch Tarras had 4 steals in the first half to help us stay on top.
The last few minutes of the first half
and the first few minutes
in the second half, we played slow and without much emotion,
allowing Fox
Valley back into the
game. Dylan Hein passed the ball down low for a basket at the half
time buzzer to cut the Willcats lead to 5.
In the second half Fox
Valley jumped to a 10 to 4 run - to go up by 1. The Wildcats
responded and took the lead for good. We hit a couple of
free-throws down the stretch to seal the win. Fox Valley did a
great job staying - working the ball on offense and keeping the
score close. Next game Saturday @ 2:00, UW Barron.
Monday, Nov. 26 UW-WC vs. UW-Marshfield:
We wanted to start fast
in this game and we did, scoring 49 first half points. We did a
nice job getting the ball up the court and capitalizing on some
inside baskets. We pressured them early and got a couple of
turnovers that were converted to points. Lofy & Erickson helped
spark us in the first half scoring 12 & 14 points while Parrent
scored 9 points in the half. We did a much better job finishing
inside. We have to take advantage inside when we can.
In the second half,
Marshfield cut the margin to single digits, but we hit our
free-throws when we needed to. Mitch Tarras had 5 assists for us.
Matt Parrent and Matt Erickson each had a double double. Erickson
23 pts and 12 rebounds and Matt Parrent 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Alex Aisbet also did a great job for us scoring 8 points and
grabbing 6 boards. Josh Krueger also did a good job on the boards
grabbing 8. This was a great
team effort! Next - UW Fox Valley on Wednesday, at 8:00 pm.
Saturday, Nov. 17 UW-WC vs. UW-Marinette:
The
key to this game was our defense. We held Marinette to 56 points.
We are struggling with our offense so it is important for us to play
good defense. Offensively we seem timid and unsure. We need to
continue working this part of our game. I feel we are able to put
up some good offensive numbers, but to do it we need to make better
passes and be more patient with the ball. Matt Erickson did a great
job on the boards for us. He had a double double (12 points and 10
rebounds). Matt Parrent shot the ball well for us, shooting 3 for 4
from the 3 point line. John Krueger did a good job rebounding and
defending their inside post player. He also shot 4 for 4 form the
FT line. We play at UW Waukesha on Tuesday. Waukesha was last
year's WJCAA State Champion team. Game time is 7:00 pm.
