Undecided Majors

If you are undecided about a college major, don't be discouraged because you are not alone. Almost 30% of today's college students can and do begin their university studies without having committed themselves to a specific major. In addition, many students who do choose a field, change majors (sometimes several times) before graduation.

In today's fast-paced society, even technical college and baccalaureate college graduates may average four to six career changes during their working lives. Therefore, one key to success is for young students to choose an educational goal that will provide them the greatest number of career options.

At UW-Washington County, you will discover a very strong liberal arts core curriculum that will provide you with the opportunity to explore a number of major fields before choosing a definite major. At the same time this broad, general studies approach will prepare you for the rapidly changing world. You will do develop writing and mathematics proficiencies and explore the fine arts and humanities, as well as natural sciences, social sciences, communications, business and computer science.

Career Counseling

Student Services academic advisors and the Career Resource Center are available for you as a student at UW-Washington County. In addition, you will have access to computerized planning programs: the Wisconsin Career Information System (WCIS) and the System of Interactive Guidance and Information Plus (SIGI+). These programs, available to you in the library’s computer labs, will help you to select careers to match your skills, values and life goals. Career Resource Center materials, also in the campus library, will enable you to do more detailed research on careers you want to investigate.

UW-Washington County can also provide you with access to career interest inventories and personality analysis tests. Besides the self-guided WCIS and SIGI+ programs mentioned above, Student Services counselors make available to you the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Both forms of self-assessment will help you to discover more about yourself, and to make college major and career decisions that are best for you.

Field Experiences and Internships

Several departments at UW-Washington County offer field experiences and internships for academic credit. These experiences can provide you with opportunities for observations and participation not ordinarily available in the classroom. Your field or internship work is supervised by faculty members and professionals who evaluate the importance and significance of your experience. For more information about field work or internships, contact appropriate department faculty members at the University.

Scholarship Opportunities

Faculty, administration and staff at UW-Washington County believe that outstanding students deserve recognition and should be given support and the opportunity to develop their interests, skills and talents. To this end, UW-WC, through generous benefactor donations, is able to annually award over $130,000 in scholarships to qualified new, continuing and transferring students on the basis of academic excellence, leadership, community service, and financial need.
