Perhaps the dominant theme is religion but what can we learn from what the Pardoner tells us? Before his tales he lists off the various vices men have that can be detrimental to being a good christian. He mentions gambling, swearing, heavy drinking, etc. What does this reflect of his character? Gawain was aware of his weaknesses but worked as hard as he could to avoid letting them take him over. Lancelot gave in to his weaknesses. Gawain was repentant and learned from his mistakes. The pardoner accepts his mistakes for what they are, but doesn't change. Why? Could the reason be he feels absolved of guilt because of his profession. The church is above knighthood in the Middle Ages, which would explain Gawain and other knights determination to uphold their code. The pardoner seems rather arrogant to believe he is above the sins of the normal man.
