Mission & History

To create a fun and exciting musical learning environment for middle and high school students that complements their present involvement in arts.  The orchestra will have a prestige and stability that will be recognized by universities and thus support students in their acceptance to choice college programs.  The comradeship of students, support of the community and parents, and training by experienced coaches and conductors will enhance the foundation the students already have in becoming well-rounded individuals with a solid, life-long love and involvement in music.  Above all else, the orchestra is designed to enhance the member’s love and appreciation of music.

Planning for a youth orchestra began in the summer of 2005 when Leanne Szafranski, a flute and piccolo player and teacher, and Daniel Ackley, on the music department faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Washington County, met with Dan Anhalt, the Director of Continuing Education at UW-WC.  School visits, mass mailings, and other marketing followed over the next few months and, in December of 2005, we held our first auditions.

An outstanding group of musicians were selected in a wide variety of ages in this first group:  from sixth grade to high school seniors.  Amid great excitement, our first rehearsal was January 7, 2006 (see the photo collage at left) as we began work on repertoire.

The first concert - an amazing success - was held May 20, 2006.
